Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research

In 1996, Grammy-nominated songwriter and philanthropist, Denise Rich lost her daughter Gabrielle, a vibrant 27-year-old actress and Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor, to acute myelogenous leukemia. Gabrielle lost her battle, but her dream lives on in the work of the organization created in her memory, Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research.

Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation funds the nation’s best science in the fields of leukemia, lymphoma, and related cancers of the blood in both conventional scientific research, as well as projects that combine integrative (complementary) therapies or botanical agents. In recent years, the Foundation has expanded its reach to include support for select pediatric oncology initiatives, music therapy programs, and international projects. To date, Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation has disbursed nearly $20 million in grants and maintains its status as one of the nation’s largest non-governmental sources of grant support for blood cancer research.

Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival

Since it was founded in 1972, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival has become one of the world’s pre-eminent music festivals, guided by a visionary spirit and dedicated to artistic excellence and innovation. Contributing to its magic is the Festival’s unique Santa Fe setting, nestled amid the timeless splendors of New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo Mountains. With legendary cellist Pablo Casals as honorary president, the Festival’s 1973 inaugural season hosted 14 artists performing six Sunday concerts in Santa Fe and additional appearances in other New Mexico and Arizona communities.

Today, 39 summers later, under the spirited artistic leadership of composer/pianist Marc Neikrug and executive Director Steven Ovitsky, the Festival invites scores of distinguished musicians, along with emerging young talent, during its 6-week season. Concerts take place in the intimate, historic St. Francis Auditorium at the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe, and at Simms Auditorium at Albuquerque Academy. Thousands of enthusiastic patrons young and old return year after year to enjoy the more than 80 concerts, recitals, master classes, youth concerts, and open rehearsals. In addition, in the winter season, the Festival reaches out to adults and young people in Santa Fe schools with innovative and inspiring musical adventures.

In July and August of 2012, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival will host a very special 40th Anniversary Celebratory Season, bringing many world famous musicians to the stage, including the Miro Quartet and a reunion of the members of the legendary Guarneri String Quartet. Alan Gilbert, the internationally known Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, will be the Festival’s Artist–in–Residence. For the 40th Season, The Festival has commissioned new works from Helen Grime and Magnus Lindberg and will also present premieres of co-commissions by David Del Tredici and Aaron Jay Kernis.

To further highlight this very special 40th Anniversary, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Board of Directors and its associated world class musicians have developed a conjoint Scientific Symposium on Music, the Brain, Medicine and Wellness: A Scientific Dialogue, to be held on Saturday August 4 – Monday, August 6, 2012. The Scientific Symposium’s sessions will be intercalated into the scheduled music events of the Festival.
